Before you can begin training as an ADI you must first be accepted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). This requires meeting their registration criteria and passing a criminal records check.

Once you have successfully registered with the DVSA, you then need to train for and pass three exams. These are commonly called the Part1, Part 2 and Part 3 ADI tests.

  • PART 1: This is a theory and hazard perception test similar to that taken by learner drivers.
  • PART 2: This is a test of your driving ability, again similar to the current learner test.
  • PART 3: This is a test of your teaching ability where you have to give two 30 minute lessons to an examiner pretending to be a pupil.

These tests are not hard but you will need to undertake specialist training for them and be committed to your training.
