What is the course syllabus?
To become a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you must pass the DVSA qualifying exam which is in three parts.
Part 1 – driving theory and hazard perception
We will give you the resources you’ll need to study at home for a one-hour exam which will test your knowledge of road procedure; traffic signs and signals; driving test and laws; and instructional techniques. You will also need to demonstrate your ability to identify developing hazards via a series of highly realistic CGI on-screen clips.
There is no limit to the number of times you can sit your Part 1 test but we’ll provide you with the tools and guidance to help you pass it first time.
Part 2 – driving ability
To be given a licence to teach others to drive, you first need to demonstrate you can drive to a very high standard.
One of our expert ADI trainers will assess your current driving style and (if needed) help you to develop that to the standards required to pass the Part 2 test. In addition, you’ll have unlimited access to industry leading on-line training resources and our detailed guidance notes to make sure you are fully prepared.
You are allowed a maximum of three attempts to pass your Part 2 test.
Part 3 – instructional ability
To complete your training course and become an ADI, you will need to have a one hour driving lesson assessed by a DVSA Senior Examiner (SE). This can be to a beginner; and intermediate learner; someone near test standard; or a full licence holder.
To help you prepare for and pass your final test, your training will include:
- 40 hours of in-car support from one of our ADI training experts to ensure you can confidently and effectively teach any part of the DVSA syllabus
- Unlimited access to industry leading on-line training resources which will give you a detailed understanding of the standards required to pass the Part 3 test
- Access to on-line workshops and live webinars
- Our detailed guidance notes to make sure you are fully prepared
You are allowed a maximum of three attempts to pass your Part 3 test.
How long will the course take?
The actual training can be completed in less than a month. However, the DVSA’s regulations mean it is likely to take you between 6 – 12 months to complete the full course. Here are the key stages you will have to go through and typical time frames for each:
- Criminal Record check – 6 weeks
- DVSA registration – 2 weeks
- Part 1 test - 4 weeks
- Part 2 test - 2 months
- Part 3 test - 3 months
You can’t take your Part 1 test until you have been accepted onto the DVSA register as a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI); you can’t take your Part 2 test until you have passed Part 1; and you can’t take your Part 3 test until you have passed your Part 2 test.
We will help you to complete your training within the shortest possible time frame. However, we have no control over DVSA test dates so cannot advise you on how long your course will last.
